Amy (Naomi Watts) and Peter (Tim Roth) are a wealthy and kind middle-class couple. Ten years ago, they adopted a boy named Luce (Kelvin Harrison) from Eritrea, a war-torn country in Africa. Luce had been subjected to very brutal military training as a child soldier. Amy and Peter firmly believe that a good education and inclusive love can help him reclaim his kind nature. Ten years have passed in the blink of an eye, and Luce has grown into an upright and capable young man, with the marks of his past now faded. His African American teacher, Harriet (Octavia Spencer), greatly admires him, believing he can change people's stereotypical views of African countries and races.
