The film is adapted from the real-life diary left behind by a Japanese soldier. In the early 1930s, Japanese painter Ishibashi Kentaro (played by Nakauchi Hideo) is forcibly conscripted into the invasion of China shortly after his marriage. During a battle, his unit suffers devastating losses due to the strong resistance of the Chinese army. Desperate to survive, Ishibashi crawls out from a pile of dead bodies and, in an effort to escape, puts on the uniform of a Chinese soldier. He is rescued by a widow, Feng Lian (played by Qi Zimei), whose husband was recently killed by the Japanese. Upon arriving in the village, the villagers mistakenly regard him as a hero fighting against the Japanese, treating him with great care and admiration. Ishibashi is forced to pretend to be mute to survive in the village. As days pass, he develops feelings for the kind villagers and grows increasingly disdainful of the war. At this point, the Japanese army arrives in the village to capture comfort women, and Ishibashi must decide where to go from here.
