Young officer Nick Cruz (Ryan Reynolds) thinks it over and is unwilling to join his partner Bobby Hayes (Kevin Bacon) in pocketing the drug dealer's stolen gold. As a result, he is killed in chaos during a mission. After death, Nick arrives in another world and is recruited by the R.I.P.D (Rest in Peace Department), whose main task is to hunt down spirits who refuse to accept judgment after death and linger on Earth in disguise. His partner is Roy Powell (Jeff Bridges), an old man who died in the late 19th century. With vastly different personalities and styles, this mismatched duo stumbles through their missions. Nick discovers intricate connections between the spirits and Hayes and uncovers a dark conspiracy that threatens the fate of the world.
