Hao Ge is threatened for failing to repay the grain debt to landlord Zhao, and reluctantly takes three brothers to steal military grain from the Japanese army's warehouse. Landlord Zhao recognizes it as Japanese military grain and dares not accept it, while the bandit Sun Danao doesn't want to buy it either, leaving Hao Ge to bring it home for dinner. His companion, a young widow, persuades him to return it after discovering it's Japanese military grain. Unfortunately, the Japanese have heightened their guard due to the missing grain, and on their return journey, a bag leaks rice, leaving a trail. The Japanese find them by the traces after dawn and capture several of them. At the execution ground, Hao Ge meets Sun Er, who was also captured for trying to steal military grain. Just when they are about to be executed by the Japanese, an international journalist happens to pass by, allowing Hao Ge to escape by a stroke of luck and become the captain of the Sino-Japanese Friendship Inspection Team. Sun Er does not share this fortunate fate and is secretly executed by the Japanese. As Hao Ge's situation rises, he is soon labeled a traitor and reviled by the entire village. Realizing he has been played by the so-called "Sino-Japanese Friendship" and is now estranged from everyone in the village, he angrily teams up with Sun Danao to take revenge on a Japanese squad leader, also restoring his reputation. The Japanese retaliate by massacring the village of Erlonghu. Hao Ge and his brothers engage in a fierce battle to the death with the Japanese. In the end, Hao Ge perishes in an explosion with a Japanese colonel in the army warehouse.
