In black and white, with lazy jazz music, an aimless protagonist and harmless little jokes, the film opens with a certain Woody Allen-esque atmosphere. This debut feature from German director Jan Ole Gerster tells the story of the trivialities in the life of an ordinary young man in Berlin. Tom Schilling, who gained fame in "Good Bye Lenin!", plays the protagonist Niko Fischer, a law university dropout still looking youthful at the age of thirty. Niko secretly collects an allowance from his father each month while leading a life that can be described as aimless. As a result, his girlfriend breaks up with him, and he moves to a new place where he meets a neighbor (Justus von Dohnányi) who is struggling through a midlife crisis. Indeed, Niko often feels extremely bored, yet he refuses to make any changes. His life takes a turn when his father discovers he has dropped out of school, cutting off his financial support. Nevertheless, the audience feels a great deal of sympathy for the aimless Niko on screen. Niko has a best friend, Matze (Marc Hosemann), a not-so-successful actor performing in an emotional play set during World War II. The character he plays is a Nazi (Andreas Klawonn), and unexpectedly, this role brings Niko an unexpected experience on set.
