The story takes place on a picturesque Greek island, where 14-year-old Yannis (played by François-Xavier Demaison) lives. His mother left him a long time ago, and now he leads a life of mutual reliance with his father, Daemonis (played by Emir Kusturica). Daemonis is a very serious and stern man, who seldom smiles and shows little affection towards Yannis, and over time, the distance between father and son grows. One day, Yannis accidentally discovers a dying baby pelican on the island, and kind-hearted Yannis secretly adopts the little pelican. Fearing his father's disapproval, Yannis keeps the pelican a secret, and as the pelican gradually recovers and grows, Yannis becomes a notable figure on the island.
