Released on November 8, 1991, this is "Mikadoroid," the first installment of Toho Video's Cinepack. During the final stages of World War II, Japan faced imminent defeat. Amidst this, the Imperial Army was secretly researching a weapon—the android "Jinra-gō." Although erased from history with Japan's defeat, one unit lay dormant in a buried laboratory due to air raids. Now, after half a century, Jinra-gō awakens beneath Tokyo! What will two young people, who accidentally wander into this underground labyrinth, discover? The mysterious man who has wandered for decades as an unfinished android, what does he truly desire? The story is tightly focused on its limited setting and timeframe, creating a dense narrative akin to a one-night-only fantastic nightmare. The design of Jinra-gō was handled by illustrator Asuran. With an old-fashioned streamlined aesthetic reminiscent of a steam locomotive, Jinra-gō presents a seemingly humorous and sluggish appearance, yet the nightmares and madness hidden within it provide a strange sense of persuasion, resulting in a striking finish. Additionally, the "Type 100 Submachine Gun Modified 'Be-style' Terra Gun," designed as a weapon specifically for Jinra-gō and based on real guns used by parachute troops of the time, adds to the realism of Jinra-gō's concept. Various prop guns, such as the Nambu Type A revolver and Type 96 light machine gun, also showcase realistic action scenes that tighten the visual experience. Directed by the renowned special effects creator Tomokazu Haraguchi, this film is a project he has nurtured for many years and marks his directorial debut.
