The story takes place in a fantastical city shrouded in mist, where the mad doctor Grégoire (played by Daniel Emilfork) is tormented by his inability to dream. In his anguish, he instructs his clone assistant (Dominique Pinon) to kidnap the children of the city to steal their dreams through a bizarre machine. However, all the beautiful dreams turn into nightmares in his hands. Ayi (played by Ron Perlman), a naturally large and strong man, has his younger brother abducted by the mad doctor one day. To rescue his brother, the kind-hearted Ayi teams up with Méti (Judith Vittet), a member of a group of orphan thieves, leading to an intense battle of wits and courage against the mad doctor. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses his imaginative storytelling to construct a grand dreamscape where good and evil intertwine but kindness remains unextinguished.
