In the blink of an eye, the three girls have reached the age of marriage, but stingy Hobson is not prepared to pay for their dowries. Maggie falls in love with the shoemaker Willy (played by John Mills), and despite Hobson's strong opposition to this untimely romance, the independent and strong-willed Maggie marries Willy. With Maggie's help, Willy's business flourishes and he soon becomes Hobson's fiercest commercial rival, while Maggie also helps her two sisters solve their dowry problems.
