In Paris under German occupation during World War II, Jewish playwright, director, and theater manager Lucas Steiner (played by Heinz Bennent) is hidden by his wife Marion Steiner (played by Catherine Deneuve) in the basement of the Montmartre theater, waiting for a chance to escape to the unoccupied zone. As an actress, Marion has to take over the management of the theater, hiring male actor Bernard Granger (played by Gérard Depardieu) to rehearse Lucas's new play. As the German front line expands, Lucas’s escape becomes more elusive, and he has to rely on the basement heating ducts to listen to daily rehearsals, offering secret guidance...
