If you are looking for a textbook version of "King Lear," it must be this one performed by one of the greatest actors in the world today, Sir Ian McKellen! At nearly 80 years old, Sir Ian McKellen has deeply ingrained himself in the hearts of audiences through roles like Gandalf and Magneto, and he is one of the most outstanding Shakespearean actors in the world today. Throughout his more than half a century career, he has played most of the major roles in "King Lear" and has portrayed the title role more than once. At the time of this revival, his age was very close to that of the character in the original work, infusing it with a deeper understanding. The Guardian praised McKellen's performance as "clever, clear, and detailed," while The Times described it as "meticulous yet powerful." After its opening last year at the Chichester Festival Theatre, the show’s success and packed audiences propelled this five-star production to the West End stage. Director Jonathan Munby has created a contemporary adaptation of this play by Shakespeare that is filled with cruelty and violence, yet retains its delicacy and compassion. As one of the peaks of Shakespeare's works, "King Lear" tells an ancient story of division. The aged and senile King Lear is deceived by his hypocritical and flattering elder and middle daughters, deciding to divide all his lands among them, leaving nothing for his honest youngest daughter, Cordelia. Unexpectedly, after the division, King Lear faces neglect and humiliation in the homes of his elder and middle daughters, even wandering in the wilderness during a storm. Lear goes mad but becomes more aware of right and wrong than before. Cordelia, who becomes the Queen of France, rushes to rescue her father; the villains receive their comeuppance, but Cordelia is also killed, and King Lear dies sadly beside her. The Chichester Festival Theatre, which produced this revival, is an iconic local theatre in the UK, known for its high standards of performance quality and collaborations with local communities and young artists, with many works often moving to London stages.
