The American nuclear submarine Montana mysteriously disappears while tracking an unidentified object in the deep sea. Bud (Ed Harris), the foreman of the high-pressure underwater drilling platform Deepcore, receives orders to assist Captain Coffey (Michael Biehn) in the rescue operation. Unexpectedly, Bud's estranged wife, oil company engineer Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), also joins the mission. The three-member rescue team dives to the abyss where the submarine vanished, but they find no survivors, and there’s a terrifying unknown creature lurking in the depths. After a series of crises, Captain Coffey dismisses warnings, believing it to be a Soviet conspiracy, and decides to launch a nuclear missile taken from the submarine at an unknown enemy. Consequently, Bud and Lindsey team up to fight for their survival. In a critical moment, Bud risks his life to save Lindsey and plunges into the abyss to disarm the warhead's fuse. After completing the mission, Bud has exhausted his oxygen supply, and at that moment, the deep-sea creature reappears.
