On March 3, 1860, during the seventh year of Ansei, Japan under the control of the Tokugawa shogunate witnessed a significant event that changed history. Outside the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle, amidst falling feather-like snow, the shogunate's senior councilor Ii Naosuke (played by Nakamura Kichieemon) was assassinated by 18 ronin from the Mito Domain, an incident known as the "Sakurada Gate Incident." Samurai Shimura Kingo (played by Nakai Kiichi), who served as a guard, felt responsible for his failure but could not seek death. Ordered by his parents to commit suicide on his behalf, the Hikone Domain commanded Kingo to track down the five ronin who had escaped and offer their heads at Ii's grave as a form of atonement. Over the long subsequent thirteen years, Japan underwent immense changes, including the victory of the Meiji Restoration and the abolition of the domains, yet none of this seemed to concern Kingo. Dressed in outdated samurai attire, he persistently sought the whereabouts of the ronin. Unbeknownst to him, the last remaining ronin, Sabaku Jubei (played by Abe Hiroshi), had long since adopted the alias Naoyoshi and was surviving as a coachman in the lowest strata of the city. Two tragic minor characters are destined to meet again... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Asada Jiro.
