A glamorous political show. Two passionate young men from West Coast University, Arian (Derek Luke) and Ernest (Michael Peña), inspired by their idealistic mentor Dr. Stephen Malley (Robert Redford), decide to actively pursue their life ideals by going to Afghanistan to participate in the war on terror. However, these two youths are completely unaware that the so-called war has nothing to do with human peace or national righteousness; it is merely about surviving on the battlefield. On the other end, their fates are intricately connected to a different situation in the U.S. In California, the troubled Dr. Stephen Malley tries to use Arian and Ernest's participation in the war as an example to persuade his student Todd (Andrew Garfield) not to give up on political studies, but Todd is utterly repulsed by Dr. Stephen Malley's radical ideas. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in Washington, presidential candidate Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise) finds himself embroiled in a political conspiracy and is prepared to reveal shocking insider information about the Afghan war to television reporter Janine Roth (Meryl Streep), an act that could directly affect the fates of Arian and Ernest, who are fighting on the front lines.
