For a long time, playwright David (John Cusack) has been living a life of unfulfilled ambition, his artist's pride filling him with disappointment over the corrupt and chaotic theater industry of today. In an effort to please his mistress Olive (Jennifer Tilly), a mob boss takes an interest in David's obscure script and wants to invest, with the condition that Olive must play the lead. Although Olive's nagging nature and poor acting drive David crazy, he painfully submits in the face of temptation. Thus, a strange theater troupe is born. David feels despair over the script's flaws, the conflicts among the actresses, and the lead actor's increasingly overweight physique. However, he is surprised to discover that Chazz Palminteri's character, a bodyguard named Cheech, inadvertently reveals exceptional screenwriting talent. With Cheech's help, the rewritten script achieves tremendous success, but Cheech's pathological obsession with his own script and the chaos of the romantic relationships within the troupe plunge David into another dilemma…
