"Acapella" is adapted from the novel of the same name by Mariko Koike. It tells the story of 1969, a year when the student movement swept through universities in Japan, also marking a transformative year for high school student Kyoko. She participates in the movement to abolish school uniforms and immerses herself in philosophy and poetry. One day, she meets university student Ase at a café named "Acapella" and is drawn to his mysterious and melancholic aura. The two quickly fall in love. They spend their days cooped up in a special little room discussing literature and music with Ase’s friends, Yunosuke and Emma, soaking in the beauty of the artistic life. Until one night, Kyoko witnesses a shocking scene in the little room and sees the nihilistic nature of love and ideals.
