In 1972, after the American military's defeat in Vietnam and withdrawal from Cambodia, The New York Times correspondent Sidney (played by Sam Waterston) remained in Cambodia to continue reporting. Cambodian Pandy (played by Haing S. Ngor) serves as Sidney's local translator and assistant. With Pandy's help, Sidney narrowly escapes danger multiple times. The two develop a deep friendship amidst the chaos. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge occupies Phnom Penh. Sidney manages to escape unharmed, while Pandy is captured for lacking a passport, beginning a hellish life of suffering. During his forced labor under the Khmer Rouge, Pandy witnesses the brutal and bloody regime and endures inhumane treatment. In 1978, as the Vietnamese invade Cambodia, Pandy seizes the opportunity to escape to the Thai border, where he reunites with his long-lost friend Sidney. This film won three Academy Awards at the 57th Oscars in 1985 for Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing.
