Ramón (played by Javier Bardem) suffers an accident during a seaside diving exercise, leaving him completely paralyzed. The once handsome and strong man is forced to endure a life of torment. He lives for 26 years with unimaginable pain, unable to grasp the meaning of life. He repeatedly requests euthanasia but is denied. He engages lawyer Julia (played by Belén Rueda), who gradually understands his perspective during their time together. Tragically, she also suffers from a terminal illness, and the two find a deep connection. Julia promises to help Ramón publish a poetry collection before they both choose to leave this world together. A young woman learns about Ramón's experience and urges him not to give up on life, falling deeply in love with the unfortunate man. Yet, none of this can relieve Ramón from his paralyzing torment, as he awaits Julia to say goodbye to the world together.
