The story of "Big Eyes" takes place in the 1960s, when an illustration called "Big Eye Kids" became popular. Soon after, its creator Walter Keane was sued, accused of stealing another's work, which turned out to be his wife Margaret. Margaret claimed that the paintings of the Big Eye Kids were originally her creation; she, being introverted, painted in the basement every day while her husband Walter merely signed his name at the bottom of the artworks for sale. Ultimately, their marriage fell apart. When the case went to court, the judge asked both to paint on the spot, and Walter made excuse after excuse, leading to the ultimate truth about the copyright case being revealed.
