This film tells the brutal reality of the African civil war and the longing of the African people for peace and humanity through the perspective of a pubescent girl, Komona (played by Rachel Mwanza). At 12 years old, Komona's village is destroyed by rebels, and her parents are killed. Komona is kidnapped by local rebels and forced to become a child soldier. By the age of 13, Komona is not only trained to be a killing machine by a cruel rebel commander but also becomes his sex slave. Amidst the daily pain and fear, Komona falls in love with a slightly older boy with white hair (played by Serge Kanyinda), whom she calls "the magician." At 14, Komona makes a desperate attempt to escape back to her hometown and finally breaks free from the control of the rebels. The lead actress, Rachel Mwanza, won the Best Actress award at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival (Silver Bear) in 2012. "War Witch" was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013.
