Whether you love him or hate him, you cannot deny that George W. Bush is one of the most prominent figures in today's world. As the last remaining superleader, Bush's life has been full of ups and downs, with a dramatic narrative. Americans liked him because he withstood the pressure during the storm of 9/11, leading the American people to turn their grief into strength, securing the long-coveted Middle Eastern oil fields, and establishing a hard-line hawkish style that deeply reinforced America's status as a global superpower. However, during his presidency, he also completely ended the economic rebound initiated by Clinton and even dragged the U.S. and the world into the quagmire of the 2008 financial crisis. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, aimed at combating terrorism, also plunged the lives of both the American and Middle Eastern people into sorrow.
Many comments have already been made about Bush’s merits and faults, and Hollywood has produced various films about this political figure. However, this film is the first to comprehensively portray Bush's life in a biographical format. It includes not only Bush's political career from being a senior advisor to his dad to Governor of Florida and then President of the United States but also snippets of his wild and unruly youth. Of course, the film also provides extensive documentation of the Iraq War, the most controversial focus of Bush's political career. As director Oliver Stone stated, he aims to objectively and realistically recreate a George W. Bush that we are both familiar with and yet unfamiliar.
