In the seemingly glamorous international metropolis, the tenacious and humble lives in the corners where sunlight cannot reach struggle to survive. The thin and scruffy Billy (played by Thomas Haden Church) is one of the homeless army, silent and hopeless. A chance encounter with a diary marked by burning scars provides him with a bit of solace. The diary seems to be written by a girl without parents, who pours her joys and sorrows onto the page, unknowingly becoming Billy's confidante. During this time, a group of reckless youths drive to a gathering place for the homeless, offering $50 to watch them fight each other. With the money he earns, Billy does not intend to save; instead, he chooses to squander it all. He also befriends a veteran nicknamed Little Toe (played by Thomas Haden Church), who lost both legs in the war. To save face, Billy pays for Little Toe to read the girl's diary, which inadvertently reminds this combat hero of his painful war experiences. As winter approaches, the homeless, seeking survival like wild dogs, look for even a shred of dignity and hope…
