In a small town in America, Jefferson Smith (played by James Stewart) is the leader of the local Boy Scouts and is beloved by the youth. He is elected as the new senator and arrives in Washington. There, he meets an old friend of his father's, Senator Joseph Paine (played by Claude Rains), and becomes infatuated with Joseph's beautiful daughter. Innocent Jefferson has never been to Washington before and makes quite a few blunders, becoming the target of media ridicule. Joseph asks Jefferson to draft a proposal and has his secretary Clarissa Saunders (played by Jean Arthur) assist him. However, Jefferson discovers that this so-called senator is merely a puppet for other cunning senators, and he uncovers a massive conspiracy. Jefferson decides to use his limited power to confront these people and change the corrupt political landscape. Will he succeed? How will Mr. Smith's journey in Washington end?
