In 1931, following the "September 18 Incident," the three provinces in Northeast China fell. While actively engaging in anti-Japanese theatrical activities in Shanghai, Tian Han met with Northeast exiled student Qi Baishan and others, and they became friends, devoting themselves to the anti-Japanese salvation movement. During the "January 28" Shanghai War, Tian Han felt that the theatrical stage was insufficient to express the struggle against the invaders. At the call of Xia Yan, Tian Han and others resolutely took up cameras and used film as a weapon to create a series of patriotic films, while his patriotic songs continued to be produced. When he received the news that his friend Qi Baishan and his volunteer army companions had died for their country, Tian Han, in sadness and anger, wrote the theme song "March of the Volunteers" for the film "Sons and Daughters of the Wind and Clouds," inspiring the Chinese people to fight against invasion. This song is now the national anthem of the People's Republic of China.
