At the end of the 20th century, Ayano Oreki (played by Tamiyo Kusakari), a respiratory physician at Ten'in Central Hospital, chooses to end her life after being abandoned by her illicit lover, Doctor Takai (played by Tadanobu Asano). This event makes the beautiful woman a highly controversial figure in the hospital. During her extreme despair, a kind and generous patient, Qinzo Enki (played by Hiroshi Yasukawa), brings her a rare sense of warmth and comfort. Through their caring conversations, this unusual doctor-patient relationship establishes deep trust. Aware of his dwindling time, Enki one day makes a difficult request to Ayano: he hopes she can alleviate his suffering and allow him to die peacefully and with dignity. In an era when "euthanasia" has not yet received legal recognition, Ayano faces an unprecedented significant choice... This film won fourth place in the 2012 Japan Film Magazine's Top Ten Films.
