This film is adapted from the famous play of the same name by playwright Tennessee Williams. The "Southern belle" Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh), a middle-aged woman with lingering charm, comes to New Orleans to stay with her sister after being dismissed from her position as a governess due to "inappropriate" behavior. Her sister lives in a dirty apartment, and her husband Stanley (Marlon Brando), the son of Polish immigrants, is rough, brash, and an alcoholic gambler. Having been spoiled since childhood and educated in the old Southern way, Blanche is somewhat neurotic; she considers Stanley to be uncouth, while Stanley feels that her delicate sensitivity threatens his authority as the head of the household and often insults her verbally in disdain. In such an environment, Blanche's tragedy gradually unfolds.
