The story takes place on a picturesque Italian island where a family led by Enesto (played by Mimmo Cuticchio) lives. Years ago, Enesto's son went out to sea and never returned, leaving his young son Filippo (played by Filippo Pucillo) and his mother Giulietta (played by Donatella Finocchiaro) to depend on each other. Fortunately, with the help of Enesto and uncle Nino (played by Beppe Fiorello), mother and son manage to maintain a stable life. After losing her husband, Giulietta lives in solitude and loneliness, feeling that the small island is gradually suffocating her soul; the only escape is to leave this place. One day, a group of stranded tourists washes up on the island, breaking the usual tranquility that envelops it.
