American-born Chinese writer Iris Chang (March 28, 1968 – November 9, 2004) began focusing on the horrific massacre that occurred at the end of the 1930s after completing her first work, "Thread of the Silkworm." In 1937, the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out, and within a few months, China was engulfed in chaos and suffering. The Japanese army advanced rapidly and captured Nanjing, then the capital of the Nationalist government, subjecting the city and its military and civilians to inhumane looting and slaughter. This massacre, which claimed more than 300,000 lives, became little known after the war due to various reasons, with the Japanese side repeatedly denying its existence. To restore history and seek justice for the victims, Iris Chang spent three years gathering a large amount of third-party data and conducting face-to-face interviews with survivors of the massacre in Nanjing and Shanghai. Finally, on the 60th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre in 1997, she published "The Rape of Nanking," bringing this "forgotten massacre" to the world's attention. In 2004, Iris Chang committed suicide while preparing for her fourth work. This film was jointly produced by the Toronto Documentary Film Festival and Earth Entertainment (Hong Kong) Limited, with Chinese actress Zheng Qihui portraying Iris Chang.
