Tina (Anna Hutchison) is walking home at midnight with her twelve-year-old daughter, Beth (Talitha Bateman), when they encounter a group of thugs. The thugs assault Tina, and Beth, as a witness, memorizes the assailants' faces. In court, Beth identifies the perpetrators, but the defense hires an unscrupulous and eloquent lawyer who colludes to frame Tina, twisting the truth, while the judge seeks to keep the peace. John (Nicolas Cage) is a seasoned police officer who, despite appearances, is facing a mid-life crisis. Tina's case reignites the long-dormant sense of justice within him, and he decides to step up and help the struggling mother and daughter.
