Model prisoner Frank Leone (Sylvester Stallone) has six months left in his sentence and is allowed to regularly meet with his girlfriend. The former auto mechanic has his eyes on a warehouse to turn into a repair shop, as a normal life awaits him. However, one day he is suddenly transferred to the harsh environment of Gatewood Prison, all because five years ago, he escaped from warden Zorba (Donald Sutherland) to see his mentor and adoptive father one last time. Frank’s successful escape made him a hero, while Zorba was punished and harbored a grudge. Now, Zorba has re-captured Frank and is looking for a chance to exact revenge.
Frank endures brutal treatment from Zorba and his men, but he remains patient and gradually befriends several inmates, including a prison know-it-all who always wants to escape, a skinny young "hitman," and the head of the prison repair shop. Life becomes more bearable, but Zorba continues to watch him silently, preparing to inflict greater pain...
