The legendary comedian and director Takeshi Kitano is widely known in Japan and around the world, and much of this can be attributed to the contributions of his mentors and friends. He studied under the once-prominent but little-known comedian Senma Chinsaburo, received help from many contemporaries, and forged his own path to fame, only to discover that achieving recognition and success comes at a great cost: the price of those who once helped him succeed. The story is set in the mid-1960s in Asakusa, known as one of the messier areas of Tokyo, where Takeshi Kitano dropped out of university in search of a better life, found work at the Asakusa Franceza, known for its striptease and comedy hall of fame, and soon became an apprentice to the legendary comedian Senma Chinsaburo. Senma is a master of comedy, whose students include many famous comedians like Higashihachiro and Haginori Kinichi, who have no interest in television performance, only believing in live shows. Under Senma’s tutelage, Kitano worked hard, continually honing his craft, and ultimately achieved his dream of becoming a successful comedian. However, as family television became increasingly popular, live comedy gradually declined.
