In the "Hundred Regiments Offensive" of 1940, Yang Chengwu, the commander of the 1st Division of the Jin-Cha-Ji Military Region, led his troops to eliminate over 170 members of a Japanese training battalion in Dongtuan Fortress, Laiyuan County, achieving victory in the siege warfare. After the Japanese reoccupied Dongtuan Fortress, they erected a stone monument at the village entrance in honor of their fallen officers, inscribing a poem titled "Song of Everlasting Regret" in both Japanese and Chinese on either side of the monument. The poem expresses the regret of the Japanese for not being able to annihilate the Eighth Route Army, signifying their resentment over their defeat that originated from Dongtuan Fortress. The invading Japanese army established a special stronghold in Dongtuan Fortress, which was actually a training battalion consisting of 170 well-experienced Japanese officers and non-commissioned officers steeped in the spirit of bushido. They were well-equipped and had ample ammunition. The stronghold's strategic terrain made it easy to defend but difficult to attack, marking it as a tough target among the surrounding Japanese positions. As the "Hundred Regiments Offensive" and the Battle of Jixian drew to a close, Yang Chengwu focused on this formidable target, Dongtuan Fortress. This commander, whom Commander Nie Rongzhen jokingly called a "war hawk" who’s "itchy without fighting for three days," hurriedly went to the frontline to survey the terrain as soon as his combat plan was approved. He convened officers above the battalion level to discuss the assault plan. Inside the Dongtuan stronghold, a transition ceremony was taking place between the outgoing and incoming battalion commanders in a heated atmosphere. The new commander, Jiechu, communicated orders from the brigade commander to capture Yang Chengwu alive. The outgoing commander, Kato, stated that he would not return to Japan for vacation unless Yang Chengwu was captured. Jiechu persuaded Kato to return home to reunite with his wife, but Kato sadly revealed that his beloved wife had committed suicide three years ago by cutting her throat when he left the island, to allow him to fight in the Greater East Asia Holy War without worries. Jiechu felt the same as he took out a dried cherry blossom: this was a gift from his wife when they parted, signifying that when he served in battle, it would be the time the cherry blossom was in its brightest bloom. Both were willing to die for the Emperor. Meanwhile, Yang Chengwu’s wife, Zhao Zhizhen, a cadre of the Eighth Route Army and the Women’s Committee Secretary of the Party Committee, was carefully sewing booties under the light. After finishing his diary, Yang Chengwu told his wife: "We're about to fight, please send little Yisheng to Old Spoon's house; they are the fortress family and there’s a child of the same age as Yisheng there." The assault began at night. Battalion commander Shen Liqiang insisted that his third battalion be the stormtroopers. Amid gunfire and chaos, the soldiers crossed the defensive trench outside the stronghold, avoided the electric fence, and quickly reached the frontline position. The Japanese, relying on their strong fortifications and ample ammunition, counterattacked our positions. Both sides engaged in several waves of charges and counter-charges, resulting in a stalemate. The brutal Japanese forces launched poison gas at our positions, causing severe casualties. Yang Chengwu decisively ordered a halt to the attack and withdrew from combat. Zhao Zhizhen organized militia and civilians to urgently rescue the injured commanders and soldiers, while they quickly produced gas masks for the troops. Chief Jiang swiftly coordinated with underground party members to contact Translator Jin to resolve the issue of the poison gas bombs as soon as possible. The Japanese commander Jiechu, crafty as ever, sent orders to the traitors to search for and capture Yisheng, who was wearing the booties. What they didn't know was that Old Spoon's wife had put the booties on her child’s feet to protect Yang Chengwu’s child. Translator Jin and our underground worker cleverly located the fuse for the poison gas bombs, and our underground worker risked his life to destroy the fuse. The siege warfare lasted for three days and nights. During this time, the Japanese reinforcements suffered consecutive heavy blows from our forces and fled in disarray. Jiechu and Kato, furious, ordered their remaining soldiers to charge with bayonets; the close-quarters combat was fierce, and an entire platoon of our shock troops was sacrificed. Yang Chengwu ordered the artillery: "Fire all the shells!" Under our army's overwhelming firepower, the remaining Japanese forces shrank into the central gun turret. The turret was fortified, and neither grenades nor 60mm mortars were effective. Squad Leader Yu Yong, along with his soldiers, attempted to carry over 20 grenades bound together using a ladder from a breach in the fortifications to the enemy bunker; just as they were about to push the ammo bundle into the enemy’s shooting hole, they were hit by enemy fire and hung on the ladder. Battalion Commander Shen, desperate, rushed up to retrieve Yu Yong's abandoned ammo bundle and forcefully stuffed it into the shooting hole, while those inside pushed back with all their might. Battling through gritted teeth and red eyes, he managed to wedge the bundle into the hole, and with a loud "boom," a section of the turret was blown away. Battalion Commander Shen fell to the ground, bloodied and arm-less. At that moment, a traitor tremblingly waved a white flag, holding up one of the tiger-head booties, shouting to our front line: "The Great Lord has captured Yang Chengwu’s daughter; if you withdraw, we ensure the child’s safety. Otherwise, don’t blame us for being ruthless." Yang Chengwu clenched his fists: "Fight! We will absolutely fight!" Zhao Zhizhen and several militiamen pushed a makeshift cannon to the front line. Chief Jiang aimed and fired. With a thunderous boom, half of the bunker was overturned. The Japanese, like startled birds, failed to comprehend the new kind of weapon. In the courtyard, the Japanese set a fire. Desperate, Jiechu and Kato ordered their remaining troops to die in loyalty to the Emperor. Seeing anyone hesitating, Jiechu personally executed them or threw them into the flames. Yang Chengwu and his soldiers charged into the courtyard to stop the brutal acts. Chief Jiang picked up Jiechu’s cigarette case from the ground and handed it to Yang Chengwu, which contained dried cherry blossoms. Yang Chengwu remarked: "These cherry blossoms grow on our homeland, yet they are stunning; it's a pity they are in the wrong place now, withered and dying!"
