After the shocking 9/11 events in 2001, the United States launched a manhunt to track down and kill Osama bin Laden, the top figure of al-Qaeda. Maya (played by Jessica Chastain) is a tough and resilient female agent of the CIA, assigned to work at the U.S. embassy in Pakistan with the single mission of finding bin Laden. Despite her discomfort with the use of torture to interrogate terrorists at the time, she firmly believes that obtaining crucial information is paramount. She dedicated ten relentless years of her life to a single goal: sifting through a vast amount of counter-terrorism intelligence to find a needle in a haystack, which she would then use to bring down a camel named bin Laden. Ultimately, her efforts are rewarded—on May 1, 2011, U.S. Navy SEALs, acting on her intelligence, stormed Pakistan to carry out a strike operation, successfully killing Osama bin Laden. Yet, after all of this, Maya is left unsure of her next move... Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the only female director in Oscar history, Zero Dark Thirty reunites the team behind The Hurt Locker, focusing on a decade of American counter-terrorism efforts and detailing the largest manhunt in history.
