Chiron (Ashton Sanders) grows up in loneliness as his mother Paula (Naomie Harris) is addicted to drugs and does not care for him. He is often bullied due to his small stature. By chance, Chiron meets drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali), who, along with his girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monáe), provides Chiron with a second home. Kevin (Jharrel Jerome) is Chiron's only friend, and over time, their feelings grow beyond friendship. However, to hide his sexual orientation, Kevin succumbs to peer pressure and violently confronts Chiron, leading to a permanent rift between them. Years later, Chiron receives a call from Kevin, and they finally decide to confront their true feelings.
