In 1940, the War of Resistance against Japan entered its third and most arduous phase. The Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, led by the Communist Party of China, engaged in a life-and-death struggle against the Japanese invaders, in stark contrast to the Nationalist government, which attempted to take advantage of the chaos to limit the development of the CPC, thereby obstructing the progress towards victory in the war.
