During the 19th century American-Mexican War, Army Captain John Powell, having been deemed cowardly, is assigned to a desolate outpost in the Nevada mountains, living a dull life with a group of inferior soldiers. Later, a Scottish man named Ivis bursts into the camp, explaining that he was originally with a group that was caught in a snowstorm on their way here, forcing them to take refuge in a cave. In a desperate situation, they resorted to cannibalism, with Ivis being the sole survivor who escaped from the madness of the cave. Upon hearing the news, Captain Powell leads a team to investigate the cave, only to discover that Ivis is a cannibal. The film's story may appear to be a low-grade bloody horror film, but it is actually quite serious, exploring themes of war and survival with profound insight. Director Antonia Bird's fast-paced handling is straightforward, and the latter part of the film even captures a sense of black comedy. The two main actors, Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle, both deliver distinctive performances.
