Fourteen-year-old John has grown up in a monastery without family or a past. One day, a mysterious woman named Angela (played by Maria João Bastos) finds John and claims to be his biological mother, recounting her story. Angela is the daughter of a marquis, and she falls in love with the count's son, Silva (played by José Afonso Pimentel), facing strong opposition from her father. However, rebellious Angela does not yield; pregnant with Silva's child, she decides to elope with him. The enraged marquis sends assassins to kill Silva and even targets the unborn child. Fortunately, Angela gets help from a priest and a mysterious figure, allowing John to grow up. After reaching adulthood, John travels to Paris and meets a noblewoman who asks for his help to find the murderer of her brother. What John does not expect is that the murderer is, in fact, the same mysterious person who once helped him and his mother.
