Julia (Cathleen Nesbitt) is elderly and wealthy but has no children, and therefore, no legitimate heirs. To address this, she seeks out the witch Blanche (Barbara Harris). Julia tells Blanche that her sister had an illegitimate son whom she sent to be raised by another family, and now she wants to find this poor child to inherit her fortune. Thus, Blanche and her lover George (Bruce Dern) begin an investigation and learn that the family who adopted Julia's nephew was all killed in a fire, set by none other than the person they are looking for—Edward (William Devane). Now, Edward has changed his name and become a jeweler. Cunning and fearing exposure of his past crimes, he hires Maroney (Ed Lauter), who helped him escape justice, to kill Blanche and her group.
