"The Secret of Mary Celeste" is filled with strong suspense, with realistic and natural visuals, and deeply etched character portrayals. The suspense that runs throughout the film is not resolved until the very end. The director's detailed psychological depiction of the characters makes this classic film absolutely astonishing even by today’s standards! The merchant ship Mary Celeste is loaded with cargo and ready to leave New York Harbor for Italy. Captain Benjamin wants his wife, Sarah, to accompany him. Benjamin describes the beauty of the sea, the red dawn, groups of white sails, and marvelous nights to Sarah, completely erasing her fears about the voyage. Another merchant ship’s Captain Jim is also in love with Sarah. He and Benjamin were once friends but parted ways after falling in love with the same woman. As the merchant ship is about to set sail, there aren’t enough sailors, so Benjamin seeks Jim's help. Jim maliciously sends someone aboard the Mary Celeste, wanting Benjamin never to reach his destination. The crew has a past with Wilson, the first mate of the Mary Celeste, who also departs with the merchant ship. A storm arises at sea, and the merchant ship is tossed about violently, with crew members drowning beneath the waves. The first mate warns Sarah that there are dangers afoot from the very moment they set sail, destined for death. Sarah feels terrified, and what follows is even more horrifying as crew members are killed one after another. Death looms over the Mary Celeste, and both Captain Benjamin and Sarah go missing, with only Wilson and the first mate left alive. The truth is finally revealed: all of this was orchestrated by the first mate as an act of revenge. The first mate shoots Wilson and, in a delirious state, jumps into the sea. Jim's merchant ship eventually discovers the drifting Mary Celeste, but the ship is devoid of life.
