Due to the construction of a dam by a power plant, the Cahulawassee River will become a lake and disappear. Four friends who love adventure and nature—Lewis (Burt Reynolds), Ed (Jon Voight), Bobby (Ned Beatty), and Drew (Ronny Cox)—plan to go rafting on the Cahulawassee River over the weekend. The four find a guide in the desolate little town that is about to become a lake area, and after simple preparations, they begin their adventure at the riverbank. The next morning, Ed tries to hunt but catches nothing, feeling quite bored in front of the strong and agile Lewis, so he and the overweight Bobby head down to the river first to scout the path. However, they encounter two armed strangers who control and insult them; when Lewis arrives, he kills one of the strangers. The four hurriedly escape, at which point the river becomes treacherous, with rapids and rocks everywhere proving deadly, transforming their adventure into a fight for survival...
