In 1930s Shanghai, detective Zheng Haodong is invited by his long-time乡 (hometown) lawyer colleague Zhou Hai Ping to search for the missing fortune of wealthy merchant Lin Zhenjiang after his death. The heir, Lin Huiyun, is Lin Zhenjiang’s daughter, whom he hasn’t seen for over 20 years. Zhou Hai Ping struggles to locate her and brings her from Tianjin to Shanghai. However, the will has multiple beneficiaries, including Lin Huiyun, Lin Zhenjiang’s last private doctor Gao Liwen, and lawyer Zhou Hai Ping himself. The group drives to Lin Zhenjiang's villa in the suburbs, where Zheng Haodong basically determines the location of Lin Zhenjiang’s hidden fortune.
