On September 26, 1939, the Eighth Mixed Brigade of the Shuyuanzhizhong stationed in the Shijiazhuang area launched the "Autumn Offensive" against our Jinchajig Military Region. Commander He Long of the 120th Division and Commander Nie Rongzhen decided to seize the opportunity to ambush and annihilate Shuyuanzhizhong. Chen Zulins, the commander of the 5th Regiment of Hebei, and Political Commissar Xiao Feng dispatched the second battalion commander, Wu Yonggang, to lure the enemy, but the enemy refused to take the bait. On the Mid-Autumn Festival, the officers and soldiers of the 5th Regiment believed that the Japanese troops were timid and became complacent, even disregarding the challenge issued by Shuyuanzhizhong. In the dead of night, Shuyuanzhizhong personally led the Japanese troops across the defense line of the 5th Regiment, heading straight for Chen Zhuang, preparing to annihilate our 120th Division headquarters and the Jinchajig Military Region command. Xiao Feng, still deep in sleep, was awakened by a call from division commander Xiong Botao, who scolded him. He urgently telegraphed Battalion Commander Wu, demanding clarification of the enemy situation and to follow closely behind the Japanese troops, maintaining pressure on Shuyuanzhizhong to buy time for headquarters to retreat. Shuyuanzhizhong was intercepted by the 716th Regiment and then turned to attack the defense line of the 3rd Battalion of the 5th Regiment. The enemy used gas shells and breached a section of the 3rd Battalion's defenses. Xiao Feng commanded the new troops to set fire to the Japanese enemy in the reed marshes and recapture the position. Commander Huang and he agreed to see which regiment could kill or capture Shuyuanzhizhong. The division headquarters ordered a general attack, with the 5th Regiment serving as support for the 716th Regiment. After the battle began, Shuyuanzhizhong broke through from the direction of Wansi Temple. The division ordered that all troops be pressed forward. Wang Daqi used a heavy machine gun and confiscated grenade launcher to accurately kill Shuyuanzhizhong, greatly boosting the morale of our troops. After fierce fighting and heavy losses, the 5th Regiment and the 716th Regiment met up and completely annihilated the Japanese troops. Li Yalan unfortunately sacrificed her life in the battle.
