A poor boy from the Congo is self-reliant, walking into the jungle with an axe. With extraordinary determination, he cuts down large trees and produces charcoal using traditional methods. He fears not the hardships, dreaming of a better life where he can build a cozy home for his wife and daughter with his own hands. With only a bicycle loaded with heavy bags of charcoal, he pushes it alone on a long journey, hoping to sell it for a good price in town. The road is fraught with dangers, as people block the way for bribes and customers try to bargain unfairly. Human relationships are cold, and he prays to the heavens, hoping for a miracle. Photographer Jaha captures this coal-selling life up close, reminiscent of Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill, with outstanding imagery and documentary perspective. It won the Critics' Week Grand Prize at the 70th Cannes Film Festival.
