Once, Santiago (played by Spencer Tracy) was the best fisherman in the area; it was impossible for him to return empty-handed after venturing out to sea. However, now Santiago is aging, and months of not catching anything have made him realize that the situation is dire. Faced with doubts and ridicule from his peers, Santiago appears calm on the surface but is secretly anxious inside. To catch fish, Santiago ventures into unfamiliar waters, where he discovers a "big one." Subsequently, he engages in several rounds of struggle with the creature, ultimately capturing it. Soon, the scent of blood in the water attracts a host of sharks, and to protect his prize and defend his honor, Santiago embarks on a life-or-death battle with the sharks.
