This film depicts a few days in the lives of a writer named Harmon (played by John Cassavetes) and his sister Sarah (played by Gena Rowlands). Most of the film's events take place in Harmon’s home as they struggle in life: Harmon lives a deeply dissolute life, surviving on alcohol, cigarettes, and a series of short-term relationships with women, whether they are women he meets through work or in nightlife settings. He is also an exceedingly incompetent father, leaving his 12-year-old son in a hotel room and even teaching him how to drink. His sister Sarah is going through a divorce from her husband due to her erratic behavior; her daughter wishes to live with her father, which causes her great emotional pain, almost leading to a breakdown. At the end of the film, Sarah leaves Harmon’s home to be with another man, while Harmon walks to the front of the screen to say goodbye to the audience, bidding farewell to his life as well.
