The Shaolin Silent Disciple (played by Jackie Chan) learns martial arts to avenge his father's murder, starting from fetching water and chopping wood, enduring the hardships of internal skills training. Scenes of him mastering martial arts in the Wooden Man Alley frequently appear in his dreams, and the traumatic image of his father's murder, along with the guidance from Master Wu Mei at Shaolin, encourages him to push through his fatigue. The Silent Disciple discovers the locked-up old monster Fa Yu in the forbidden area of Shaolin. Unlike the Shaolin monks, Fa Yu, feeling grateful for the Silent Disciple's care, instructs him in martial arts despite his lack of qualifications. During this time, the Silent Disciple’s senior brother attempts to enter the Wooden Man Alley but fails miserably. Master Wu Mei observes the Silent Disciple practicing diligently and teaches him the Snake Wing Eighth Step to refine his character.
