Texas, soon after the Civil War. Henry Moon is a fugitive evading legal punishment. He is captured while trying to escape to Mexico and is brought back to town to be hanged. The town has a special law that allows a condemned man to gain his freedom if a single woman in the town is willing to marry him. Henry is lucky – at the last moment, Julia Tate proposes to him, and they quickly get married. However, Henry soon discovers that Julia's motives are purely commercial - she needs someone to mine her land. This leads to a very cold marriage.
