Delphine (Catherine Deneuve) and Solange (Françoise Dorléac) are two sisters who rely on each other. One has red hair, the other has blonde hair; one excels in graceful dance, while the other possesses a heavenly singing voice. As the summer carnival approaches, Delphine and Solange each have their respective tasks in the carnival amidst the increasingly festive atmosphere. The painter Guillaume (Jacques Riberolles) admires Delphine's beauty, but Delphine has already given her heart to a young painter named Maxence (Jacques Perrin), who paints her portrait. Meanwhile, Solange meets a young man named Simon (Gene Kelly), and they share mutual feelings. To Solange's surprise, Simon is the very composer she has been searching for, and she has always hoped he would read a concerto she wrote.
