Based on true events, the drama is divided into two time periods and tells the story of the events leading to a murder and trial. Ray (played by Barrett) and his 23-year-old brother Nathan (played by Tapy) are arrested after stabbing their mother's partner. Whatever the circumstances that led to the child committing murder, the law is clear: the age of criminal responsibility is 10 years, and at 12, Ray must stand trial in an adult court. Moving in with his mother Veronica and his 23-year-old brother Nathan, Ray witnesses an argument escalating to a violent axe attack by his mother's partner Scott against his brother. Although arrested and tried, Scott is acquitted and soon returns to live at home. Family life begins to deteriorate as Nathan becomes reclusive, neglecting his health and appearance, while Ray increasingly takes on a caregiving role—for Nathan, for their mother, and for his younger siblings, Veronica and Scott's children. One night, when the boys hear that Scott is threatening to take the axe again, they launch an attack on him, brutally killing him. After the murder, the two brothers are arrested and charged with murder. Nathan and Ray are separated as they go through the judicial system and meet with their respective legal teams. Ray's team is led by defense attorney Kerry Stephens, who is responsible for Ray's placement in foster care (due to his age and status as a "looked-after child"), awaiting his trial alongside his brother in an adult court. Kerry and her team prepare Ray's defense—they will argue that Ray lost control on the night of the attack and should be convicted of manslaughter rather than murder. As the trial begins, they find that Nathan's defense team has decided that Nathan should not testify, leaving Ray to stand alone in the witness box to provide evidence for his defense.
