In that snowy world with beautiful auroras, a mother and daughter live together. The mother (played by Michelle Yeoh) was informed by a shaman at birth that she was an ill-fated person, and the shaman said she would bring misfortune to those around her. The mother lost her lover in war when she was young and was raped by a villain. The strong mother devised a plan to push the villain into an abyss. She found a baby girl and escaped with her to a remote place in the distant north. Years later, the original baby has grown into a beautiful girl. Facing the harsh natural environment, the mother and daughter endure life-and-death trials together to survive. However, after the mother saves a man, the originally harmonious relationship between mother and daughter changes. The man initially has an ambiguous relationship with the mother, then falls in love with the daughter and decides to take her away from this desolate area. The mother has a habit of braiding her daughter’s hair; one day while the man is out, the mother strangles her daughter with a braid and peels off her face to wear it on her own. When the man returns home and goes to bed with the woman, he discovers that he is lying beneath a face so terrifying, followed by a chilling wail echoing across the icefield…
